Accurate and rapid short drilling
up to 2 x d
Centering/pilot drilling or short drilling
The drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot (pilot drill or short drill) forms an internally consistent program with deep-hole drilling tools such as the CrazyDrill Cool or CrazyDrill Cool XL. The pilot hole is the starting position for precise drilling and a stable machining process. It is drilled on inclined, convex or concave surfaces using CrazyDrill Crosspilot. The pilot drill yields a high degree of position accuracy due to its short and sturdy design. Moreover, the follow-up drill is guided cylindrically through the pilot hole, thus ensuring orthogonal and alignment accuracy (straightness).
An adjusted tool tolerance guarantees hole quality (no measurable step from pilot to follow-up hole) as well as a stable machining process (no jamming).
Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot (slanted drilling) (k6):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00024”)
≤ 6.35 mm (.250”): + 0.001 mm /+ 0.009 mm (.00004” /+ .00035”)
Tolerance of the follow-up drill CrazyDrill Steel 4 x d to 7 x d (k5):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.004 mm (.0” /+ .00016”)
≤ 6.35 mm (.250”): 0.001 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.00004” /+ .00024”)
Tolerance of the follow-up drill CrazyDrill Cool 6 x d to 15 x d (k5):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.004 mm (.0” /+ .00016”)
≤ 6 mm (.236”): 0.001 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.00004” /+ .00024”)
Tolerance of the follow-up drill CrazyDrill Cool XL 15 x d to 40 x d (k6):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00024“)
≤ 6 mm (.236“): 0.001 mm /+ 0.009 mm (.00004” /+ .00035“)
Drilling process
General information
In the industry of metal work tools, shorter processing times are always in high demand. At the same time, the requirements to the manufacturing precision and the process reliability are extremely high. In order to fulfill these requirements, the "machine tool – spindle – tool – tool holder" system need to be considered as a whole (see additional info).
For the use of CrazyDrill Crosspilot, Mikron Tool has defined a fast and process-reliable procedure which achieves optimum drilling results.
Quick short drilling or pilot drilling
1. Pilot drilling or short drilling in one step:
2. Drilling with follow-up drill:
Drilling with CrazyDrill Crosspilot
1. CrazyDrill Crosspilot:
- Activate external cooling
- Go down at drilling speed and feed rate (see cutting data) and drill up to max. α = 60° in one step
- After the desired cutting depth is reached with the drill, return at feed rate or rapid traverse
2. Drilling with follow-up drill - drilling process:
- Drilling with CrazyDrill SST-Inox (diameter 0.2 mm – 2.0 mm/.008” – .079” / up to 8 x d)
- Drilling with CrazyDrill Steel (diameter 0.4 mm – 6.35 mm/.016” – .250” / up to 7 x d)
- Drilling with CrazyDrill Alu (diameter 0.4 mm – 3.0 mm/.016” – .118” / up to 10 x d)
- Drilling with CrazyDrill Cool (diameter 0.75 mm – 6.0 mm/.030” – .236” / up to 15 x d)
- Drilling with CrazyDrill Cool XL (diameter 1.0 mm – 6.0 mm/.039” – .236” / up to 40 x d)
- Drilling with CrazyDrill Flex (diameter0.1 mm – 2.0 mm/.004” – .079” / up to 50 x d)
Tested and approved
Mikron Tool has determined the ideal cutting parameters (drilling speed to tool life ratio and process reliability) when using CrazyDrill Crosspilot. These are listed in the cutting data tables according to drill diameter, drilling depth and material to be machined. The detailed cutting data tested by Mikron Tool, such as cutting speed Vc, feed rate f and drilling impact Q, permit a quick and secure machining.
The overview of the cutting values table according to material group, material type, hardness degree and tensile strength, material number, DIN and AISI/ASTM/UNS permits quick determination of the parameters to be used.
Packaging
An impact-resistant and user-friendly drill packaging is absolutely necessary for CrazyDrill Crosspilot. Mikron Tool offers all tools of the CrazyDrill Crosspilot family in a high quality, single package.
