The smallest flexible carbide drill bit
with integrated cooling

CrazyDrill Flex of Mikron Tool makes the drilling within the diameter range from 0.1 to 2.0 mm (.004” to .079”) possible with versions for steel, titanium and stainless materials (coated version for steel and version for stainless materials in fractional inches available). The straight connecting element (neck) between the cutting body and the shaft gives the carbide drill CrazyDrill Flex the length required for drilling deep holes up to a bore depth of 50 x d and makes it very robust. Thanks to CrazyDrill Flex, small and deep holes can be drilled quickly, precisely and in a cost-efficient manner on machining centers, automatic lathes or rotary transfer machines (instead of using a gun drilling machine). In the case of deep and small drilled holes, this extra-long drill guarantees a significantly shorter drilling time compared to the single-lip drill, the electro-erosion (EDM) or the laser method.

The flexible tungsten carbide (VHM) drill is not actually a specially designed drill for plastic, but it can also be used as for certain thermoplastic materials and plexiglass.

Three types of drill bits can be selected: CrazyDrill Flex Steel, CrazyDrill Flex Titanium and CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox.

CrazyDrill Flexpilot

To achieve high position accuracy in deep-hole drilling, it is recommended to do a preliminary piloting / centering operation with the CrazyDrill Flexpilot (Steel coated or uncoated, respectively Titanium) for CrazyDrill Flex Steel and Titanium. These short drills for depths up to 3 x d, create a perfect position accuracy and cylindrical guidance for deep holes realized with CrazyDrill Flex and permit high drilling speeds based on their innovative drill geometry.

CrazyDrill Pilot SST-Inox

To achieve high position accuracy in deep-hole drilling of stainless, heat and acid resistant materials and for lead free brass, it is recommended to do a preliminary piloting / centering operation with the CrazyDrill Pilot SST-Inox for CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox. This coated short drill for depths up to 3 x d with integrated cooling, creates a perfect position accuracy and cylindrical guidance for deep holes with CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox and permits high drilling speeds based on its innovative drill geometry.

CrazyDrill Flex Steel

CrazyDrill Flex Steel (coated and uncoated), suitable mainly for steels, cast iron, aluminum alloys, brass and bronze and for drilling depths of 20 x d, 30 x d and 50 x d. The versions for drilling depths up to 30 x d are used with external cooling. The drill version 50 x d has through-tool coolant channels integrated in the shank.

CrazyDrill Flex Titanium

CrazyDrill Flex Titanium has a specific cutting geometry for long-chipping materials such as titanium and copper  and for drilling depths of 30 x d and 50 x d.

The version for the drilling depth of 30 x d is used with external cooling. The drill version 50 x d has through-tool coolant channels integrated in the shank. Both types are uncoated, which is perfect for drilling mentioned materials.

CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox

CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox is the version for stainless, heat and acid resistant materials and for brass lead-free. The drill is suitable for drilling depths of 30 x d and 50 x d, both versions have through-tool coolant channels integrated in the shank and are coated.

CrazyDrill Flex - flexible deep-hole drill with integrated cooling

The micro-drill CrazyDrill Flex is a solid carbide drill, flexible and at the same time suitable for deep holes of up to 50 x d. The versions 20 x d and 30 x d (CrazyDrill Flex Steel and Titanium) are cooled externally. The version with a usable length of 50 x d has through-tool coolant channels integrated in the shank just as the version 30 x d for stainless steel (CrazyDrill Flex SST-Inox).

These coolant channels guarantee continuous targeted cooling of the cutting edges from just 15 bar (218 psi). Due to the special configuration and form of the coolant holes, a very concentrated jet is obtained, which flushes the chips from the flutes and cools the tip of the drill. The coolant jet remains concentrated even at a high rotation speed. Besides the cutting oil, emulsions can also be used.

Flexible carbide drill for difficult conditions

Thanks to the special carbide grade and geometry, the CrazyDrill Flex is very precise and resilient. A flexible center piece with a reduced cross-section ensures elasticity (flection) and provides at the same time higher rigidity (torsion/compression) compared to drilling with a through flute. This permits a process-reliable drilling, particularly under difficult conditions, and inaccuracies in the hole positioning can be compensated, which can typically occur in a multi-spindle lathe or a (rotary) transfer machine. CrazyDrill Flex can easily compensate up to 40% of its diameter and does not break like the conventional solid carbide drill bits. Until now this was only achieved with HSS tools.

The version for stainless materials / CrNi alloys is designed with a special cutting geometry and digressive helical groove (patented). This  ensures good chip breaking and quick chip removal.

Process reliability

Moreover, the carbide drill has a special cutting geometry. It permits quick drilling in the case of misalignment, without damaging the cutting edges. This is ensured by the fine grinding (web thinning) of the drill tip, which results in a reduced penetration force (reduction of feed force up to 50%) and the stable central part of the drill (axial direction). Long tool life and process reliability are guaranteed.
