Precise and efficient drilling
with drills from 0.3 mm (.0118")

Centering and pilot drilling

CrazyDrill SST-Inox IN/IK 8 x d

Because of the high degree of self-centering capability, CrazyDrill SST-Inox can be used on regular and straight surfaces without a centering or pilot hole for drilling depths up to 8 x d.

Higher requirements: for irregular respectively rough or inclined surfaces or for the highest degree of position accuracy, Mikron Tool recommends:

CrazyDrill SST-Inox IN/IK 12 x d

Mikron Tool recommends a pilot or center hole for CrazyDrill SST-Inox 12 x d

Pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Pilot SST-Inox or centering with CrazyDrill Twicenter are the perfect combination for a precise hole (position and alignment accuracy) and a stable machining process.

The pilot drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot does the same when drilling on inclined surfaces.

The hole quality (position and alignment accuracy, no measurable transition from pilot to follow-up hole) and a stable machining process (no jamming) is guaranteed by matched tool tolerances.

Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Pilot SST-Inox: +0.002 mm / + 0.006 mm (+ .00008” / + .00024”) (m5)

Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot (inclined holes): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00024”) (k6)

Tolerance of follow-up drill CrazyDrill SST-Inox: 0 mm /+ 0.004 mm (.0” /+ .00015”) (k5)

Drilling process

General information

In the industry of metal work tools, shorter processing times are always in high demand. At the same time, the requirements to the manufacturing precision and the process reliability are extremely high. In order to fulfill these requirements, the "machine tool – spindle – tool – tool holder" system need to be considered as a whole (see additional info).

For the use of the types of drill bits CrazyDrill SST-Inox, CrazyDrill Pilot SST-Inox, CrazyDrill Twicenter and CrazyDrill Crosspilot, Mikron Tool has defined a fast and process-reliable procedure which achieves optimum  drilling results.

Stainless steel drilling up to 12 x d

  1. Pilot resp. center drilling (in one step)
  2. Drilling in several pecks (deep-drilling cycle with chip breaking and chip removal)

2. Drilling:

  • With CrazyDrill SST-Inox up to maximum drilling depth Q1 in one step, followed by peck to remove chips

Note:

Between pecks, take the drill completely out from the bore. After the drill reached desired cutting depth, return at increased feed rate (or in case of perfect conditions rapid traverse) to safety position.

Tested and approved

Mikron Tool has determined the ideal cutting parameters (drilling speed to tool life ratio and process reliability) when using CrazyDrill SST-Inox IN and CrazyDrill SST-Inox IK. These are listed in the cutting data tables according to drill diameter, drilling depth and material to be machined. The detailed cutting data tested by Mikron Tool, such as cutting speed Vc, feed rate f and drilling impact Q, permit a quick and secure machining.

The overview of the cutting values table according to material group, material type, hardness degree and tensile strength, material number, DIN and AISI/ASTM/UNS permits quick determination of the parameters to be used.

Packaging

An impact-resistant and user-friendly drill packaging is absolutely necessary for CrazyDrill SST-Inox. Mikron Tool offers all tools of the CrazyDrill SST-Inox family in  a high quality, single package.
